SUBMISSION… OUR CROSS TO BEAR?

Published March 1, 2013 by EMMANUELLA ODUM

What a WEEK!!! Crazy schedules…, appointments, work hassles and finally the Almighty and horrendous traffic jam you experience on the way home!!(For those of you living in Lagos, Nigeria, you’d understand better).
Like that isn’t enough, the ever–dexterous drivers (Err, you know them guys) who are always in a hurry, don’t mind breaking all the traffic laws to ensure they remain in that hurried state and not necessarily to get to a destination!
On one of such “TRAFFIC –JAM” occasions, a female driver refused to relinquish her right to the portion of the road which she occupied, to an erring male driver. In response to that admirable show of bravery, our unrepentant driver had this to say
,“ choi! I’m really sorry for your husband O, na so you go dey behave for house’’
*computer stop correcting me, this is Pidgin English jor*. Now, the lady in question could only ignore him and accept such a jibe as quite NORMAL!
However, this scenario got me thinking. Sometimes I can’t help but wonder whether the degradation of the female folk is an eternal cross we (women) must all bear. Even Mother Nature seems to have turned “her” back on us! (Yes, why didn’t she give the opposite sex, the honour of giving birth? after all they claim to be stronger). But then, who started this notion that women must face such bias in the first instance? Who began this convention which is slowly turning into a law?
Well, different circles attribute it to various sources and myths .Some Religious groups claim that it accrues from the inability of Eve to deny the temptation of the serpent! (Like men don’t fall into temptation every day). Some Scientific circles opine that this convention is traceable to the days of the cavemen, where the primitive man perceived the females as the weaker sex and thus dominated, and regrettably the females accepted this title! The ancient philosophical position opines that it is owing to the fact that females are intellectually retarded due to their natural mental incapacity to think! And so many more circles churn out their divergent views but with one common notion… Females stay rightfully dominated by the opposite gender! It’s a CROSS WE MUST BEAR.
I have often heaped the blame on the women of the ancient days for cowardly accepting this stigma…this mere convention, as a law upon their unfortunate souls, but then I remember women like JOAN OF ARC (JEANNE D’ARC) popularly referred to as “la pucelle” (the maid), who with divine help that came in the form of voices, she only could hear (those attacking Eve should note this oh), was victorious in ventures of war even knights failed at! Sadly she was sentenced and burned at the stake by the same opposite sex,for the same reason they have failed to recognize… 1 determined woman is stronger than 10 armed men!
Let’s look at the life and times of CLEOPATRA, a queen whose intelligence, determination plus feminine wiles *winks* nearly made her the world’s greatest empress. Ironically, the world even acknowledges the strength of women and it stresses this view with the myth of the AMAZONIAN WOMEN. Although it’s a mere myth, it however gives an adequate glimpse as to how women possess an intriguing tendency to exceed beyond man’s imagination if given the opportunity.
Hence you can’t lay the blame at the feet of the ancient heroines for reasons you are now aware of. I’d rather not heap this blame on the modern females as well because; it’s practically same with the heroines of the previous generation. There are influential women who have moved seemingly impossible mountains ,to such an extent that it has become impossible to state that females chose to be docile or better still ,it’s their nature to be so and they can do nothing about it. Women…, who wield such immense power in all spheres of life, be it Politics; the Academia; Science… etc. Yet we still groan under the pangs of submission. Bringing to mind the sad tale of that poor Indian girl who was brutally raped ,I recall the comment of an individual(a man of course) ,that she was to blame because she boarded the wrong bus which made me wonder just how much the opposite sex has been given a respite from even observing the principle of humanity!
It is amazing to discover that as a woman there is an invisible line, she ought not to exceed…a spot meant for the “stronger folks” only. It seems to be our cross that a woman must remain submissive and by “submissive” I mean, content to be his weaker self that can never match him either in the field of play or regarding natural intimacy. Thus women with manly attributes (fierceness, determination and ambition) are outwardly criticized … but inwardly feared. If you happen to be one of such women…Here’s a toast to you. THE AMAZON salutes your courage.
A well-deserved shout out to my male readers!!
I remain THE AMAZON and my amazing quill loves you *winks*.

Your interpretation of being ”submissive” carries conjectures that of some wrongly-held (mis)conceptions. The African society like many like it, is partriachal (which in itself is not a bad thing) and while I don’t support degradation of gender, it is fair to say that women are expected to form a support-system, one which is highly-appreciated. Western idealogies of equality are, well, ideologies.

    • I HAVE JUST TWO QUESTIONS . WHO AND WHAT MADE THE AFRICAN SOCIETY PARTRIACHAL IN NATURE? IS IT REALLY A JUSTIFIABLE CONVENTION TO ENSURE THAT WOMEN REMAIN “SUPPORT SYSTEMS” AS YOU HAVE SO APTLY PUT IT? HOWEVER, I MUST ADMIT THAT A PART OF ME IS STILL REVELLING IN YOUR CRITICISM. I THINK WE MAY HAVE HIT A NERVE HERE:)

  • Fantastic piece Ella. I’d like to say again that that there’s a huge part of me that’s feministic. However, I still believe that in the interest of peace, a woman should submit to her husband. This submision should however be one of mutuality, not subservience. Ultimately, women should have the same rights as men to chart whatever course they deem appropriate. Good one once again Ella. Can’t wait for d next piece.

  • Beautiful as usual. Women should be submissive to their husbands, even th Bible says so. But submission doesn’t mean stupidity. I believe women actually truly rule this world Bt make men believe they do because they r caring beings. If the man was truly strong, he wouldn’t av taken the apple from eve in the first place. Not a positive example though but then again think about it, he did have a choice didn’t he? Thumbs up Ella

  • The Amazon with an amazing quill! Talk about the stuff of poetry! Nice work, Ella. Insightful writing here…and truly interesting. Amazing! There is nothing ontologically inferior in women, I believe. The names you have mentioned testify to that. (And, to your list of heroines, many more more names could still be added). However, the greatest hallmark of these women is that they took responsibility, and didn’t just fight for rights. Feminism nowadays is becoming all about the clamour for rights. Many women want equal rights with men, but few are willing to take up equal responsibilities. I believe you are one of these few. So, Ella, talk to your womenfolk. Lead them aright, through this path of responsible womanhood that you already are on. The quill is a feather, my dear, make yours fly!
